BRYAN—A vintage World War II hangar at the Texas A&M Riverside Campus has been transformed into a state-of-the-art training facility for utility workers in the electric power and telecommunications industry by the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX).
The $1.5 million transformation will be unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in conjunction with the opening session of the Southwest Electrical Metering School.
More than 120 electric meter technicians will be attending the weeklong Southwest Electrical Metering School at the new facility. It will be the first time the annual school has been held at Riverside, and the first time the school has offered hands-on training with live meters. Technicians will have the opportunity to perform measurements and configurations at meter training stations in the new facility. On Tuesday, Oct. 18, a vendor show will feature about 60 exhibitors, to allow participants to view the latest technologies and developments in the electrical metering field.
Classrooms in the new facility include state-of-the-art, interactive Smart boards, custom-built workbenches and cabinets, built-in audiovisual systems, automatic lighting and central heating and air conditioning with automatic thermostats. The complete renovation of the hangar included gutting and rebuilding the entire interior of the facility from the ground up and also replacing the exterior surface materials.
The building, located at 7th Street and Avenue A on the Texas A&M Riverside Campus, is the newest construction project on the former World War II Air Force Base. The design and construction of the project was completed by Patterson Architects and Quad-Tex Construction.
TEEX, a member of The Texas A&M University System, offers hands-on, customized training, exercises, technical assistance and technology transfer services impacting Texas and beyond. TEEX programs include fire, homeland security, law enforcement, public works, safety and health, search and rescue and technology transfer.
