More than 280 fire chiefs and fire department officers from across the state are attending the Texas Fire Officer Symposium in College Station this week. The symposium, sponsored by the Texas Engineering Extension Service, has drawn officers from paid, volunteer and combination fire departments of all sizes.
Speakers include Chief Alan Brunacini from the Phoenix Fire Department and other national fire service leaders, who are providing the latest information on management, leadership, firefighter safety, the new National Incident Management System and other timely topics.
Other speakers include Chief Dennis Rubin of the Atlanta Fire Department; Chuck Burkell of the National Fire Academy; and Chief John Buckman, past president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
"We have received a lot of positive feedback," said Mike Wisby of TEEX's Emergency Services Training Institute. "We hope to make this an annual event."
Coordinated by TEEX’s Emergency Services Training Institute, tuition costs for the program are covered by funds from the Texas Legislature as part of TEEX’s mission to serve Texas fire service personnel. Participants are eligible for continuing education credits from both the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association.
