Course Description

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to conduct offensive rescue operations involving floods and swift-moving water.

The course complies with Chapter 11, "Surface Water Rescue,” and Chapter 12, "Swiftwater Rescue," as described in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1006, Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications (2008 edition). You will receive a TEEX Certificate of Completion at the end of the course.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participants Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
  • Footwear appropriate for a water environment
  • Personal Flotation Device (PFD) USCG Type III/V
  • Swiftwater rescue helmet with head light (must be ANSI rates Z89.1- 1997 Type 1)
  • Whistle
  • Wetsuit or drysuit (optional)

Reserve equipment

We have a limited supply of PFDs and helmets to borrow during the class. Participants can email [email protected] to reserve equipment and it is provided on a first-come basis.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

  • Prior to attending this course, you should have medium to strong swimming abilities.
  • Due to the strenuous nature of search and rescue activities, you should secure a professional evaluation of your physical condition prior to enrolling in these courses.

Suggested Audience

This course is appropriate for any responder (Fire Service, Law Enforcement, EMS, Public Works, and Military) who may be required to conduct offensive rescues during a swiftwater or flood incident.

Other Information

Classes will begin at 8 a.m. on the first day of the course, unless other arrangements have been made. For the purpose of making hotel reservations, the course is conducted in the New Braunfels, Texas area.

Conduct During Live Online Instructor-Led Courses

If the minimum number of students required to conduct the class have not registered 24 calendar days prior to class start date, the class will be canceled. Therefore, it is imperative that agencies/individuals wishing to enroll make arrangements to register and make payment prior to this deadline.
