This course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge required for certification to Plans Examiner I as described in Chapter 7, “Plan Examiner I” of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner (2014 edition). The course covers the basics of plans administration and plans review.
Participants who successfully complete the course and pass the required certification and skills test will receive a National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) national certification. The course can also be used for Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certification.
Pro Board Certification Only
There are no prerequisites for Pro Board Plans Examiner I. It is recommended that you have a code enforcement background but it is not required.
Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) skills testing is not offered as a part of the class. This course is eligible for Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) state certification via the TEEX Pro Board / Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Reciprocity process. Candidates, who successfully complete the course, pass the course final exam, and the Pro Board certification testing process will receive a Training Prior Approval (TPA) number on their Pro Board Certification. The Pro Board Certification with the TPA number may be submitted to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection for reciprocity.
Course Completion Requirements
All students are required to bring to class:
- 2nd Edition of the Plans Examiner for Fire & Emergency Services manual
- NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, 2015 edition
- Architects and Engineers Scales
- Basic Calculator (independent of your phone)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- PPE Level 1 as described in the TEEX Student Safety Manual. All students are required to follow this manual at all times.
- Wear regular station duty wear for fire field activities
- Wear office attire for classroom sessions
- You may not wear to any class or field activity:
- sleeveless shirts
- open-toed shoes

This course requires PPE Level 1 as described in the TEEX Student Safety Manual. All students are required to follow this manual at all times.

Annual Fire Training School Registration Requirements
Annual Schools require that you use the online registration system. If you are using a Purchase Order (including H.B. 2604 voucher) please place the number in the PO field for payment. Please know we must have a copy of the PO or voucher within 48 hours of your registration or you will be canceled out of the class.
Annual Fire Training School Late Registration
The full rate will be applied after the early-bird registration deadline.
