Course Description


PER213 - Wide Area Search - 24.00 Hours

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the course. The Incident Command System (ICS), which is a Unified Command system under the National Response Framework, is used in the course. Participants are encouraged to become familiar with the ICS by taking the online courses IS 100: Introduction to Incident Command System and IS 200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents before attending the course.

The Wide Area Search course is designed to provide training for search resources to effectively plan, manage, and conduct search operations across a spectrum of search response incidents. The course introduces the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform wide area searches at a disaster incident site. The course concludes with a culminating event table top exercise that requires participants to utilize all the skills introduced throughout the course. Upon successful completion of the course the participant will be able to perform necessary functions utilized by search team personnel to effectively respond to wide area search incidents.

    The course is designed for all emergency responders from public and private agencies that will be required to coordinate and perform wide area search operations during disasters either natural or man-made, including acts of terrorism. The course is appropriate for city, county, private, or regional response agencies. Course participants include emergency responders from the following disciplines/services: law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire service, military, emergency management agency, hazardous materials, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Animal Rescue Emergency Response Teams (ARERT).

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded 2.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU) certified through the International Association for Continuing Education & Training.

    Hosting Requirements

    Course delivery is at your location. The jurisdiction must provide a full roster to TEEX US&R one month before the beginning of the course. The hosting jurisdiction must provide classrooms and/or a training facility. Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the course, unless other arrangements have been made. This class is entirely classroom based and does not require an personnel protective equipment.

    This course is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants and Training at no cost to local jurisdictions across the United States. Jurisdictions are encouraged to contact the Urban Search and Rescue Division at TEEX to schedule the delivery of this course.

    The cost of travel, lodging, or per diem for students attending this course is the responsibility of the sponsoring jurisdiction.
