Description

This course enhances community bioterrorism preparedness and pandemic influenza preparedness by providing awareness-level training on the roles and responsibilities of the local public health community. The course covers Federal resources and capabilities that exist to help provide post-exposure prophylaxis for a large population in response to a catastrophic public health emergency and reviews actions taken by a local jurisdiction during a public health emergency that require deployment of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). This course was created by the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center (NERRTC), a member of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium that provides grant-funded training on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security. NERRTC is also a Department of Health and Human Services Center for Public Health Preparedness.

Topics

This course has three modules that include an overview of public health, federal resources for mass prophylaxis, and mass prophylaxis operations in the local jurisdiction. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define public health and a public health emergency.
  • Define potential emerging threats.
  • Define bioterrorism and explain how it relates to public health emergencies.
  • Identify the role of the Local Public Health Agency.
  • Identify components of the SNS program.
  • Identify situations in which the SNS would be requested or deployed.
  • Identify the process for procuring the SNS.
  • Explain receiving, storage, and staging (RSS) sites.
  • Understand the coordination of transfer of the SNS from the RSS to the Points of Dispensation (POD) sites.
  • Understand considerations for special populations.
